Description
Contributes to normal blood formation, normal homocysteine metabolism, normal cell division, and normal maternal tissue growth during pregnancy.
How It Works
5-MTHF is the circulating, blood-brain-barrier-permeable form of folate and the direct methyl donor for the methionine synthase reaction. It requires no enzymatic conversion before use.
Why This Form
The metabolically active form. Synthetic folic acid depends on dihydrofolate reductase for conversion, an enzyme whose capacity is rate-limited in humans and varies with MTHFR genotype. B12 is included because high folate intake can mask the haematological signs of B12 deficiency.
What we rejected: Folic acid. Beyond the conversion bottleneck, unmetabolised folic acid appears in circulation at higher intakes.
The Research Behind It
Comparative bioavailability trials of 5-MTHF against folic acid, with plasma folate response as the measured endpoint.
What The Evidence Does Not Show
MTHFR polymorphism prevalence is a population statistic. We cite it and do not suggest that any individual reader carries a variant. If you are pregnant or planning pregnancy, discuss folate intake with your provider.
