Description
Contributes to normal blood coagulation and to the maintenance of normal bones.
How It Works
Vitamin K2 is the cofactor for gamma-glutamyl carboxylase, the enzyme that activates the Gla protein family. Two of these — osteocalcin in bone and matrix Gla protein in vascular tissue — govern where calcium is deposited.
Why This Form
All-trans isomer, verified by HPLC, with the isomer ratio published on the certificate of analysis. This is the single most under-reported quality failure in the category.
What we rejected: Commodity MK-7 of undeclared isomer ratio. The cis isomer is biologically inactive, and material containing it is sold at the same milligram figure as all-trans without disclosure.
The Research Behind It
Multi-year human intervention trials measuring vitamin K carboxylation status, with carboxylated and undercarboxylated osteocalcin as primary markers and bone mineral density followed over three-year durations.
What The Evidence Does Not Show
Carboxylation status is a biomarker rather than an outcome. The vascular literature is mechanistically suggestive but not conclusive, and we present it that way.
