Description
Evidence Tier · Randomized Controlled Trials
Contributes to normal immune system function, to normal collagen formation for the normal function of skin and blood vessels, and to the protection of cells from oxidative stress. Increases non-heme iron absorption.
How It Works
Ascorbate is the required cofactor for prolyl and lysyl hydroxylase, the enzymes that cross-link collagen. It acts as an electron donor regenerating other antioxidants, and reduces ferric to ferrous iron at the intestinal wall, which is why it increases non-heme iron uptake.
Why This Form
Split into two daily doses rather than one. Human pharmacokinetic work has mapped the saturation curve for intestinal ascorbate absorption and shows fractional uptake falls sharply above roughly 200 mg in a single dose. We dose against that curve. This is the clearest example of our approach: the research dictates the format, not the marketing.
What we rejected: The single 1,000 mg daily capsule that dominates the category. It exceeds the documented absorption ceiling and the excess is largely excreted.
The Research Behind It
Human pharmacokinetic saturation studies establishing the dose-absorption relationship, alongside randomized controlled trials on immune endpoints and collagen synthesis markers.
What The Evidence Does Not Show
The immune trial literature is mixed for healthy, non-deficient adults. We make no claim about preventing or shortening illness. Bioflavonoids are included on traditional-use and antioxidant grounds; the human evidence for them is thinner than for ascorbate itself.
